In the summer they are extremely popular for sunbathing, sports and as places to come at the end of a Cape Town day to watch the sunset. Most visitors explore the peninsula by taking the coastal roads from Cape Town down through the Atlantic seaboard to Cape Point National park, and then to return to the city via teh False Bay route.  This can be done under your own steam and a day's car hire is an ideal way to explore at your own pace; alternatively, all the tour operators offer the exursion - some take mountain bikes too, for a spot of cycling in the Cape Point National Park. If opting for the self-driving you can go in either direction, but to see the seals on Duiker Island from Hout bay you need to be there early morning, so it makes sense to head down the west coast first.
